“Come the Conqueror”

It’s Worldwide Invasion time for the Avengers as Kang, fresh from his defeat in a one-on-one encounter, unleashes his legions on an unsuspecting Earth. Part two of the Kang trilogy of episodes really builds momentum and keeps going the entire time with barely any pause. Continue reading

“The Man Who Stole Tomorrow”

So, I’ve got to admit: I didn’t “get” Kang the Conqueror at one time. When I started reading comics (around 1979-1980) Kang just didn’t seem all that menacing. It wasn’t until Kurt Busiek’s treatments of him in Avengers and Avengers Forever that I really got the idea of Kang as a foe to be reckoned with and re-read some of his earlier stories and saw him as both noble warrior-general and arrogant conqueror rather than second-rate Doctor Doom. Fortunately, the trilogy of Avengers episodes starting here taps into the Kang I “got” as well as his original comic book appearances to make him a foe worthy of Earth’s Mightiest heroes. “Widow’s Sting”

This episode is a good one for the “agent-level” Avengers who rely primarily on their skills and training (and gadgets) rather than on being giants, gamma-monsters, or gods. Continue reading

“459”

The aliens invade in the episode of Avengers that introduces us to the Kree and their ancient foes, the Skrulls, as well as Captain Marvel and a future member of the Avengers. It’s also a nice spotlight on Ant-Man, Wasp, and their budding relationship. Continue reading

“Masters of Evil”

So I’m going to stop mentioning “this was a good episode” because they’re all pretty good. This episode we get to see some real team vs. team action, however, even more so than in Gamma World (with the U-Foes and the Leader’s other gamma baddies). Continue reading

“Gamma World” – Part 1

Apart from being named for one of my favorite RPGs of all time, “Gamma World” is a fun episode that finally rounds out the Avengers’ roster with the return of the Hulk and the addition of Hawkeye to the team. Continue reading
