Re: Animated • Avengers Retrospective

Ten years ago today, the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series premiered. It was just the start of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but “EMH” (for short) packed a lot into its two seasons, before the Marvel/Disney juggernaut took plans for animated series and content in a different direction.

A little less than ten years ago, I also started reviewing episodes of Avengers with an eye towards superhero roleplaying games and game design. In recognition of the 10th anniversary of one of my favorite animated series, I wanted to share those reviews of the complete first season of Re: Animated • Avengers. I hope you enjoy and … Avengers Assemble!

“Bereft”

Miss Martian awakens in the desert with no recollection of how she got there—or how she even arrived on Earth, for that matter. Suddenly, she’s attacked by a feral, out-of-control Superboy, who bounds away into the desert after Megan manages to hold him off, leaving only the torn remnants of his shirt and “S” shield behind.

“Downtime”

The team goes up against Clayface and things do not go well. Batman arrives in the nick of time to take down Clayface with a couple of explosive weapons and a taser, then gives Aqualad a dressing-down at the cave for not having “his head in the game.” He gives Kaldur’ahm some time to make up his mind: “Either you’re here one-hundred percent or you need to walk away.”

“Schooled”

A traffic accident in Metropolis! A school bus teeters on the edge of a bridge. This looks like a job for Superman … and Superboy, for that matter, as the young hero leaps to the rescue. Although he reaches out to Superman, Superboy finds that the Man of Steel is still uncomfortable with his clone’s existence, something of concern to Batman.

On Isla Santa Prisca, members of the Kobra Cult pit crime-boss Bane against the “champion” of their lord and master, the self-proclaimed god Kobra, except that he turns out to be Mammoth, dosed with an even more powerful version of Bane’s “venom” formula.

Robin, Speedy, Aqualad, and Kid Flash are to take their first step toward eventual League membership, and they’re all eager to do so.
